Chesterton Society Meeting

October 11, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

For a variety of reasons, we are moving our meetings to the second Tuesday of each month.

In the Everlasting Man, we have just finished Part One of the Book, which was Chesterton’s survey of World History from pre-historic times up to Antiquity at the time of the Advent of Christ. As you’ll remember, Chesterton’s survey emphasized the religious nature of Man and his civilizations. Several chapters were dedicated to Chesterton’s method of studying Comparative Religions under the heads of God, Man, Mythology, the Demons and the Philosophers. He continues with a survey of the history of ancient pagan cultures, culminating in a battle to the death between the best of ancient paganism in the Mediterranean world with the worst, darkest, most demonic paganism. This was the Roman Republic verses the Carthaginian Empire in the Punic Wars. After Rome’s victory, Chesterton goes on to outline the subsequent decline and decay of Roman culture and civilization.

Thus Chesterton ends Part One of his history, which he had given the title, “On the Creature Called Man.” He has set the stage quite richly for the turning point of history which he presents to us in Part Two, which he has entitled, “On the Man Called Christ.” As the first chapter of Part One was entitled, “The Man in the Cave,” so the First Chapter in this Part Two is called, The God in the Cave.” He brings all the themes he developed in Part One to bear on the Nativity of our Lord in a stable in Bethlehem.

Our Father Brown story this month is The Point of a Pin. It is the 49th story we’ve read, leaving only two more. What will we read once we finish reading The Complete Father Brown?

The Man Who Was Thursday, anyone?

Happy reading! Until the 11th!

Yours,

Spencer
