Sacramento Chesterton Society Meeting

September 12, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

My apologies also for the unreasonable length of the reading. It’s been thirty years since I first read “The Napoleon of Notting Hill” and I remember it through the rose colored glasses of memory. Reading it this time, I see a pattern Chesterton uses over and over again – He spends a prodigious amount of time (and pages) setting the scene and the atmosphere for the action that takes place in the last half. If you get through the first half, following his arguments (and spending an inordinate amount of time scratching your head, wondering what is he getting at), you are rewarded with the acceleration of the pace and the action of the story and the conclusion.

And to tell the truth, I am reading the last chapter of the book tonight. I almost didn’t complete it. I spent a lot of time reading Saturday and Sunday. And since I opened my big mouth about reading the whole thing in a month, I just didn’t think it right of me to not finish the reading, especially if some of you did finish it.

But the book was fun. And I see a lot of parallels with “The Ballad of the White Horse.”

So come join us tomorrow evening for “The Napoleon of Notting Hill.” We’ll only devote this one meeting to it, and with the October Meeting we will start in earnest Chesterton’s “St. Francis of Assisi.”

Yours,

Spencer
