Hello everyone,

Our November meeting will be the second Tuesday of November, the 8th (which also happens to be Election Day). It will be at the usual time, right after the evening Mass at St. Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Church, approximately 7:30 pm in classroom 2 (or 3).

We are currently reading The Everlasting Man. This month we will be discussing Chapter 2 of Part II, “The Riddles of the Gospel“.

The Father Brown story we are reading is “The Insoluble Problem“.

Speaking of Election Day, we can use the meeting as an occasion to mourn the losing of the Culture War. And that is the case no matter who receives the least amount of votes against them in the election. (I really don’t think anybody is voting for someone in this election.) I believe the Culture War has been lost for some time now, but this year has been a kind of watershed year, or, to change the metaphor, a tipping point. This year I would say I have felt like the ground has been giving away beneath my feet (to introduce yet a third metaphor).

But there’s no need to be morose about it. Let’s mark the event with something like a Wake! With beer and snacks. We can fondly recall the cultural clashes and skirmishes of the past few decades, and we can pledge ourselves to the faithful Resistance.

In last month’s reading, Chesterton showed us the Nativity of our Lord; presenting it in such a manner that hopefully we might see it fresh and new, as if for the first time. In this month’s reading he does the same thing for the Person and public ministry of Jesus Christ; presenting Him in such a manner that we might behold Him, as it were, with new eyes. And in the process he reveals the common arguments against the Deity of our Lord and for the “Historical” Jesus to be absurdities.
